Reading Strategies
Step 1: Previewing
Start by looking at the section headings, bold prints, italicized words, charts, and pictures.
Why this works: Your brain automatically wants to make patters and compare what you are reading to your current knowledge. By giving your brain a preview of what you are about to learn, it will start to make these connections much more easily, allowing it to process information and allow you to get much more meaning from the text.
Step 2: Come up with a question to answer
You need to give your brain a reason to read the materials, so come up with a question that you want answered by the readings.
Why this works: You have now made yourself much more motivated to read to answer the question you have come up with. A curious brain will want to find out the answer!
Prior to lectures complete Steps 1 and 2
Preview the material that will be covered in class and think of 2-3 questions. This will allow you to be fully engaged in lectures and get the most out of them. Your brain will be working to find the answers to the questions, causing you to pay more attention and get more out of the lecture.
Step 3: Paraphrasing
Read one paragraph at a time, stop, then put that information into your own words. Move onto the second paragraph and repeat but bring the information from the first paragraph into this summary. Repeat until you are finished.
Why this works: It feels like this might take longer, but it doesn’t. You are breaking the big readings into smaller pieces, which are then used to understand the material. You won’t be re-reading as much, and you have a much deeper understanding of the materials.
